Warzone 2100 is a unique open-source RTS originally released by Pumpkin Studios in 1999, now maintained by the community under GPL-2.0-or-later. Set in a post-apocalyptic 2100, you lead “The Project” to rebuild civilization by scavenging pre-war tech, customizing units (mechatronic tanks), and strategizing over an extensive tech tree. Its fully 3D engine allows free camera rotation and zoom, and terrain height affects line-of-sight and ballistics. Build modular bases, harvest scarce resources from oil derricks, and design your own units by combining chassis, drive systems, and weapon or support turrets offering tremendous replayability. Campaign missions guide you through the Nexus threat, while skirmish and multiplayer modes (cross-platform on Windows, macOS, Linux) let you challenge friends or tackle scenario mods. The map editor and open asset pipeline encourage user-generated content. Though its graphics are dated compared to modern AAA titles, the depth of customization and enduring community support make Warzone 2100 a standout free RTS experience.
